REXX came into existence as a interpretative language for programmatically automating tasks and managing data. In the early 1980’s when IBM mainframes were the dominant platform in the data processing world, the REXX programming language played a coordinating role in evolutionary MVS and VM environments: TSO, ISPF, and VM/CMS. More specifically, REXX served as the front end consolidator for I/O and interactive online editing and processing of data via 3270 terminals. REXX programs were written to parse, check, and format different text and data types which could then be extended with CLISTs and Dialog Manager. REXX became part of IBM’s SAA and has continued to be included as a standard component in its operating systems: mainframe, midrange, and PC. SYS-ED consultants coded a wide variety of first generation REXX programs and provided REXX training and tailored REXX courses to data processing personnel (information technology is the contemporary acronym). Over the years we did extensive work with OS/2 REXX, Object REXX, REXX in DOS 7, and Regina REXX on Windows NT. SYS-ED's REXX courses draw upon this multidisciplinary experience and cumulative body of work as reflected in our courseware library. Our latest work has been with REXXTools and the REXX compiler. Few consulting or training companies have the experience and library of REXX stepwise teaching examples and sample programs that we do. Courseware for Teaching SYS-ED's courseware library consists of student hand-outs, training aids, documented walkthroughs, and industry-specific exercises. The Computer Education Techniques knowledge base is a service for answering questions, inclusive of the research and validation of the accuracy of information in the public domain. Grow Your Own REXX Programmers Over the past year, we have had a number of inquiries regarding whether SYS-ED still offered REXX courses for IT professionals. 1. That it is extremely difficult to find REXX courses which provide the foundation and develops the specialized skills needed for maintaining and updating REXX programs. 2. IT personnel will need to learn skills in order to retrofit and integrate existing REXX, CLISTs, and Dialog Manager code with the next generation programming languages - primarily Enterprise COBOL and web enablement mainframe systems software: CICS, IMS, and DB2. Training will cut across generations; some very experienced people will be learning Java and web enablement technologies; while first generation IT staff will be using COBOL and IBM systems software for the first time. Training programs based upon the use of various training techniques have been chosen for suitability to the particular course material and audience as well as scheduling and class size requirements.

The following methods will be use for introductory material for personnel, most operator training, and programmer training on selected topics.

• Distance-learning will be used for introductory OOPs and XML introduction.
• SYS-ED in New York will be used for their 3-day REXX Scripting, 2-day REXX Scripting: Advanced, , 2-day CLISTs,and 3-day Dialog Manager courses.
• IBM course offerings will be used for z/OS operator training.

	Standard entry-level training programs consist of four components: z/OS operating system, programming skills, programming language, and system software. These programs have been developed and refined over a quarter century of consultancy and teaching and draw upon the SYS-ED courseware library.
	Tailored fast-track programs are comprised of course modules selected by the client organization: topics, examples, workshops, validation assessments, and duration. Many clients also elect to incorporate an educational consulting component which reflects their standards and implementation strategy for project development.

Evolving IT - Interrelated Technologies

Information technology training for business enterprise is more complex and challenging than ever before. Organization’s have a huge investment in infrastructure and applications specific to their operations. No one is allowed to enroll in a SYS-ED mainframe course, without a consultation with our Director of Education. We review the operational objectives and project specifications for the organization evaluating whether to send its employee for the training. The employee is only allowed to register if they have the background corresponding to the appropriate learning path.
